| 内容記述 | 英語教育への批判が喧しいなか，英語の授業が口頭での受け応えを中心にした内容へと移って久しい． もちろん，すぐに使える英語を学ぶという社会のニーズがある以上，このようなオーラル・メソッドへの移行は やむをえないが，その反面，文法訳読方式で培われてきた「知力を鍛える」側面がないがしろにされているようだ．そこで，大学の一般教養科目としての英語教育では，幼稚な内容の会話能力をつけることよりも，知力の陶冶を第一に目指すべきではないだろうか．それは，１）言葉を大切にする（相手を理解し，自分を理解させる）精神，２）知力を鍛える（既成の価値を疑い，批判的に見ることから判断力をつける）精神，３）さまざまな専門的学問の基礎となるようなものの見方や考え方を学ぶ精神，４）個別的な問題と普遍的な問題を行き来する姿勢を持つ精神，を重視し，自分で「学ぶ」基礎を作ることである．本稿では，文法訳読方式の意義を再考し，そのモデルを提示してみたい． | |||||

| 内容記述 | In response to considerable criticism against English education in Japan, the contents of English classes have shifted into oral exercises from grammar-translation method. We have to accept this change as long as it is a social need and demand, while at the same time we should re-evaluate the significance of the grammar-translation method as an effective way to train one's intellectual faculties. Particularly at the college-level English education, the author insists on the importance of this method prior to the oral exercise because it may enable students to cultivate the spirit 1) to respect language (i.e., to understand others and to make oneself understood by language), 2) to train intellectual power (i.e., to criticize the standard value and to acquire sense of judgment), 3) to learn the fundamental knowledge and viewpoints, and 4) convey yourself between particularity and universality, in short, the spirit of self-learning. The present essay tries to consider the meaning and usefulness of grammar-translation method for the English education in Japan and to present its model with a concrete example. | |||||
