南チロルは鉄道交通の発達とともに避暑地として徐々に脚光を浴びるようになった.最初に訪れたのが貴族や文人墨客であった.旅人たちの中に二人の作家SchnitzlerとHofmannsthalがいた.今回は彼らの作品と南チロルとの関わりとを探る.前者は戯曲『遠い国』,後者はエッセイ『夏の旅』に,それぞれこの地を印象深く書きとめているからである.小論は歴史や地理,風土的環境を踏まえながら,二人の文学作品に現れた南チロルの自然,人,生活について考察するものである.
