We questionnaired nursing staff working at home-visiting nurse stations and surveyed the learning needs of visiting nurses. We analyzed the responses from 382 respondents. The staff surveyed all had at least 5 years clinical experience. Many had previously worked in hospital wards, operating rooms, at nursing homes etc. Almost 90% of respondents had attended‘ on-the-job training’ (OJT). This figure fell for‘ off-the-job’ or ‘residential’ training because it was difficult for staff to re-arrange their working and family life. This was especially true in the case of part-time nurses. Nursing staff attended training workshops focusing on subjects such as terminal care, care for patients suffering from dementia , patients with respiratory diseases etc. Respondents found these workshops rewarding and were able to apply the leaning to their clinical duties. Respondents stated they wanted to learn more about terminal care in the home, specialist care for individual diseases and providing support and advice to family members.
