To address this, we performed a qualitative analysis of free descriptions by students on labor support evaluations. A total of 759 instances of learning were identified from free-form descriptions of 211 cases (patients), in which students reflected on their experiences with labor support. Contents were categorized into the following seven groups: 208 cases of “realization of learning,” 204 cases of “unskilled midwifery techniques,” 163 cases of “inadequacy in coping with labor progression,” 117 cases of “lack of support for expecting mothers,” 55 cases of “poor care resulting from lack of experience,” six cases of “coordination with others,” and six cases of “inadequate adjustment of mental states.” Although descriptions related to “realization of learning” were the least frequent of the groups during the first case, it was the most frequent after the eighth case. Students reflected on issues that they needed to learn within the ten weeks training period in order to gain awareness on their own. They also attained a firm awareness of systematic learning during the ninth and tenth cases. These results suggest that it is important for teachers and mentors to encourage students to gain self-confidence by becoming aware of learning and accomplishments.
