A questionnaire including a scale for social skills (KiSS-18: Kikuchi, 1988), demographic variables, living environment, lifestyle, and psychosocial factors was distributed to 1,756 students belonging to three public high schools in Nagano prefecture in Japan from June to July, 2009. The hierarchic multiple liner regression (HMLR) analysis used to clarify factors related to social skills consisted of three steps of variable inclusion: 1) demographic variables (forced), 2) living environment and lifestyle (forced), and 3) psychosocial factors (stepwise selection). A total of 1,539 (87.6%) students responded and 1,169 (66.5%) provided valid data. In the HMLR analysis, gender, email as major means of the communication, anthropophobic tendency, motivation, active stress coping style, basic trust, social support of friends of the opposite sex, and social support of school mates were significant predictors for social skills, with adjusted R square of the model being 0.55. Of them, anthropophobic tendency contributed most strongly. Social skills training (SST) was to be used as a support method to reduce school maladjustment and improve personal relationships. These results indicate that it will be more efficient to assess anthropophobic tendencies, and to teach social skills to highly anthropophobic students via the health room.
