We qualitatively analyzed the practicum reports of 41 students who agreed to participate in this study. They had a three week clinical practicum in gerontological nursing between October 2006 and July 2007. 　As a result, a total of 193 codes of various students’ learning experiences in their nursing practice yielded six categories: 1) “understanding of characteristics of the elderly,” 2) “implementation of gerontological nursing care,” 3) “broadened views toward the elderly,” 4) “students’ growth as a nurse,” 5) “understanding of characteristics of institutional care,” and 6) “understanding the roles of nursing in health care facilities.” The students deepened their“ understanding of characteristics of the elderly” through their nursing practice, and acquired “broadened views toward the elderly” and “students’ growth as a nurse.” In this process, the students achieved an “implementation of gerontological nursing care” highly individualized for the elderly persons.
