The purpose of this study is 1) to understand experiences of patients who determined shift from continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis to hemodialysis and 2) to examine nursing care for terminally ill patients with chronic renal failure. By examining narratives of three patients experiencing this treatment shift, we understood that this shift 1) gives patients physical and psychological burdens and 2) forces patients to determine a new life-style with the disease. In addition, we understood that patients suffer mental conflicts even though they try to face and deal with their difficult situation in an active and positive manner. Then we came to a conclusion that nurses should anticipate physical and mental crises of patients in need of lifelong hemodialysis treatment at the beginning.
