Focusing on “interpretation in translation” as a means of communication of meaning, the authors compare 1) the original text (excerpt) of the Tale of Genji by Lady Murasaki and two contrastive English translations by Arthur Waley and Edward Seidensticker and 2) Carl Busse’s poem “Uber den Bergen” with its Japanese translation by Bin Ueda.
