Ninety-nine second-year nursing students of University A who participated in home-visit training in which they visited single household elderly members of a seniors’ club in a community together with other members of the club. Of the nursing students 35 expressed consent to participate in the study, and we analyzed their training records. The analysis identified five categories of students learning in home-visit training for the elderly: “Awareness of factors leading to an understanding of the elderly”, “Learning about assessments of the overall impression of the subjects”, “Importance of building a mutual trust relationship with the subjects”, “Learning obtained by thinking of the situation of the elderly person as that of oneself”, and “Learning about support for continuous health activities”. Students were learning about the life of the elderly by entering their living place, experiencing the daily life activities of the elderly as the subject of self-help and activities of mutual help of the club members, and comparing the lives of their own as a local resident.
