Contrary to its title that reminds us of a writing manual for the general use, this book indicates no specific rules for writing or publication, but shows his stylistic theory based on his view of language. The distinctive feature of Tanizaki's view of language is that he regards language not simply as a tool of communication, but as a means of thought, and that he insists on inseparability of a language and a nation that speaks it. This attitude to language is identical with Wilhelm von Humboldt's perception of language which claims that the structure of language acts on ways of thinking of people who speak the language. In addition, Tanizaki, from the viewpoint of a Japanese man of letters, abolishes the Western \"logocentric\" ideas and emphasizes creative spheres of language to convey ideas with accuracy.
